Bi-PAP Ventilatory System

BiPAP is a low pressure, electrically driven, flow triggered, non-continuous ventilator that provides pressure support ventilation via a nasal mask. The BIPAP system is intended to expand sleep apnea patient's ventilation by supplying pressurized air through a mask. Assistance is provided by the administration of two levels of positive pressure. During exhalation, air pressure is variably positive or near ambient. The inspiratory level is variably positive, and is always higher than the expiratory air pressure.

Advanced VPAP ResMed machine modes

Spontaneous mode - The VPAP machine cycles between the inspiratory (IPAP) and expiratory (EPAP) levels in response to the sleep apnea patient's triggers.

Spontaneous/Timed mode - The VPAP ResMed machine cycles between the IPAP and EPAP levels in response to the sleep apnea patient's triggers, same as in Spontaneous mode. However, if the patient fails to initiate a breath, the machine will cycle into IPAP based on a preset interval determined by the synchronized rate (BPM) control.

Timed mode - The VPAP ResMed machine cycles between the IPAP and EPAP levels based solely on the timing interval as determined by the rate (BPM) and the inspiratory time (%IPAP) controls. The sleep apnea patient may have spontaneous breaths at any point over the IPAP and EPAP levels.

CPAP mode - With the function selector set in the IPAP position, the desired CPAP level is obtained by adjusting the IPAP control.

IPAP - The pressure level that is maintained during the inspiratory phase of the Spontaneous mode, Spontaneous/Timed mode or Timed mode.

EPAP - The pressure level that is maintained during the expiratory phase of the Spontaneous mode, Spontaneous/Timed mode or Timed mode.

VPAP Machines

VPAP machines provide a Bi-level treatment in various cases of sleep apnea and other medical conditions. These conditions include some types of respiratory disorders, sleep disorders (e.g. obstructive and centeral sleep apnea) and other syndromes such as lung diseases, neuromuscular diseases and skeletal diseases. The Bi-level VPAP machines deliver 2 sets of pressures; high pressure during inhalation and low pressure during exhalation. The advanced models of this series feature a Spontaneous Mode that intiates breathing when neccessary and turns these machines into a noninvasive ventilator.

VPAP III
The VPAP III is a bi-level positive airway pressure device which provides comfort and convenience through efficient and quiet therapy for people who suffer from respiratory disorders (mainly obstructive sleep apnea).
This Bi-level ResMed machine features Vsync and TiControl technologies that ensure a comfortable and reliable treatment, even in case of mask leaks.

VPAP III is compatible with the HumidAire 2i, an integrated humidifier that helps ease treatment and relieve symptoms such as nasal stuffiness, mouth dryness, and thick nasal secretions.

VPAP III ST
The VPAP III ST is a Bi-level machine which provides noninvasive ventilation treatment.

The advanced VPAP III ST features a Spontaneous mode that senses the patient's breathing patterns and adjusts the treatment accordingly, providing optimal comfort through efficient and quiet therapy.

The ResMed's advanced VPAP III series is designed for people who suffer from severe obstructive sleep apnea accompanied by respiratory disorders.

The Bi-level ResMed machine features Vsync and TiControl technologies that enable full synchronization between the patient and the machine, even during mask leaks and particular respiratory disorders.

VPAP III ST-A
The VPAP III ST-A is the most advanced Bi-level positive airway pressure device in the ResMed VPAP series. The VPAP III ST-A provides a noninvasive ventilation for patients who suffer from severe respiratory conditions, including Centeral sleep apnea and Congestive heart failure.

The VPAP III ST-A is equipped with a fixed and adjustable alarm system that assesses the priority of the alarm and uses colored indicators on the machine's display, to enable self-monitoring and treating acute disorders.

How Does it Work?

Much like CPAP machines, The VPAP ResMed machine provides airway support by blowing air into the patient's airway, usually through a nasal mask or face mask. The main difference between CPAP and VPAP machines is that while a CPAP machine delivers a constant air pressure, The VPAP machine delivers two sets of air pressure - one for inhaling and another for exhaling.

The pressure increases when the patient inhales and decreases when he exhales, making it easier for sleep apnea patients who have difficulty breathing spontaneously at their own rate and depth (and therefore need high air pressure for inhalation).

The VPAP ResMed machine treats patients with neuromuscular diseases, since it delivers air in and out of the lungs without a need of a muscular effort. VPAP machines were developed to give even a better treatment for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome than the usual CPAP therapy that supported breathing only during inhalation.

Many obstructive sleep apnea patients use Bi-level machines because they need a lower pressure during exhalation. The lower pressure makes Positive airway pressure treatment much more comfortable than a CPAP treatment.

VPAP machines offer the most significant improvements in patients' convenience as they achieve patient-machine synchrony.

The VPAP ResMed machine needs to stay in synchronization with the patient on each inhale and exhale.

The latest VPAP III series by ResMed includes 3 advanced VPAP machines for sleep apnea patients. These VPAP machines utilize the latest technology in variable positive airway pressure treatment, with a patented Vsync and TiControl features that provide perfect synchrony even with air leaks. In addition, 2 of the VPAP machines in the VPAP III series include not less than 4 operation programs that are used at different rates for the patient's comfort.

For a more comfortable therapy, many obstructive sleep apnea patients are recommended to add an integrated humidifier which adds moisture and heat to the dry air provided by the VPAP machine. Much like in CPAP machines, the heated humidifier helps the sleep apnea patient experience a more natural feeling throughout the treatment and eliminate the dryness that obstructive sleep apnea patients often feel during the treatment.
